Key takeaway: No single day is reliably the cheapest for outdoor gear around Black Friday, so the smart move is to pick your gear now, set a price alert, and judge each sale price against that product's own price history instead of its "was" price.

The Short Answer

Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday on November 30. In recent years the outdoor sale window has stretched well past those two days, and the day with the best prices has moved around. That makes the calendar less useful than the chart. If you know what a product normally sells for, you can tell a good price whenever it shows up.

This guide covers two things: what dated public reports say about when discounts landed in past seasons, and how to read the price-history chart on a Gear Snyper product page. For a category-by-category look at what tends to go on sale, see our Black Friday hiking and camping gear guide.

When Brands Discounted in Past Seasons

Past reports point to a sale season, not a sale day. Here's what dated public sources said about the last two years. These describe past events; they don't predict 2026 prices.

2024: the best day was expected before Black Friday

In a forecast reported by Digital Commerce 360 on September 26, 2024, Adobe said it expected Thanksgiving Day (November 28, 2024) to be the best day to shop online for sporting goods, along with toys, appliances and furniture. Adobe's forecast was based on online prices it tracks across retailers. In other words, the "best" day for gear that year was expected to come a day before Black Friday.

2025: Cyber Monday set a record, and deals ran into December

Adobe's recap published December 2, 2025 called Cyber Monday (December 1, 2025) the biggest online shopping day on record, with sporting goods among the categories it listed as discounted. It said discounts would come down from their Cyber Week peaks, but that shoppers could still find bargains through the first week of December. So in 2025 the sale window ran well past Black Friday.

REI closes on Black Friday

REI has closed its stores on Black Friday since 2015 as part of its #OptOutside campaign, and in October 2022 it said the closure would be permanent. According to Fortune's report at the time, online orders placed on Black Friday are processed the next day. If REI is one of the places you shop, plan around that day.

What this means for 2026

Don't bet on one day. Adobe's 2024 forecast pointed to Thanksgiving for sporting goods, and in 2025 deals ran through Cyber Week into December. We don't know when brands will run their 2026 sales until they announce them. A price alert and a price chart work no matter which day the drop comes.

How to Read a Gear Snyper Price Chart

Every product page on Gear Snyper has a Price History section that shows the prices we've recorded for that exact product at that merchant. Here's how to read it.

  • The range buttons switch the chart between the last 30 days, 90 days and one year of our records.
  • The green line is the price we recorded over time. Flat stretches mean the price held steady; steps down are price drops.
  • All-time low is the lowest price we've recorded for that product. It only goes back as far as our own tracking for that item, so on a newly tracked product it covers a short time.
  • 30-day avg is the average of the prices we recorded over the last 30 days.
  • Trend tells you whether recent prices are dropping, rising or stable.
  • The badge compares today's price with our records. "All-Time Low โ€” Buy Now" means the current price is at or below the lowest we've recorded. "N% Below Average โ€” Good Deal" means it's under the 30-day average. "Above Average โ€” Consider Waiting" means it's higher than that average.

If a product says "Price history tracking is being collected for this product," we don't have enough records yet to draw a chart. Set an alert and check back; the chart fills in as we record more prices.

Three things to watch for

  • Short history. A low that's only a few weeks old says less than one that holds up over a longer range. Switch the range buttons and see whether the picture changes.
  • Same item, same merchant. The chart tracks one product at one merchant. A different color, size or retailer can have a different price.
  • The "was" price isn't the chart. A list price shows what the merchant calls full price. The chart shows what we actually saw it sell for. Use the chart to decide.

Practice reading a chart: browse rain jackets, open any product page, and switch between the 30-day, 90-day and one-year ranges. (affiliate links: we may earn a commission)

When to Set a Price Alert

Set alerts now, weeks before the sale, so you have a record of each product's normal price by late November.

  1. Find the product on our deals page or through search.
  2. Open its product page, check the Price History section, and set an alert at the price you'd happily pay.
  3. Manage everything you're watching from your price alerts.
  4. When an alert fires, open the chart again before you buy.

Pick a target from the chart, not from a round number. If the 30-day average sits well above the recorded low, a target near that low is a reasonable place to start.

A good first alert: pick something you'll use all winter, like a base layer. Browse base layers and set an alert on the one you'd wear all winter. (affiliate links: we may earn a commission)

Buy or Wait: A Simple Rule

  • Buy when the badge says "All-Time Low โ€” Buy Now" or the price is close to the lowest we've recorded, and your size is available.
  • Wait when the badge says "Above Average โ€” Consider Waiting" and you don't need the gear before the sale window.
  • Buy anyway if it's an uncommon size or color you really want. Sold out is sold out, whatever the chart says.

Apply the rule: browse winter gloves and check each badge before you add a pair to your cart. (affiliate links: we may earn a commission)

Black Friday Price Charts (Reserved)

This section is saved for Black Friday price charts. We'll add charts here only if we have enough clean daily price records before the sale. Until then, open any product's page to see its own price history.

Common Mistakes

  • Waiting for Black Friday itself. Adobe's 2024 forecast picked Thanksgiving for sporting goods, and in 2025 deals ran past Cyber Monday into December.
  • Relying on the list price alone. Check the chart for what the product actually sold for.
  • Setting alerts too late. An alert set the week of the sale has little history to compare against.
  • Forgetting returns and shipping. Holiday return windows vary by retailer, and shipping can cancel out a small drop.

Shoes and boots are where returns matter most. If you're shopping footwear, browse trail running shoes and check the retailer's holiday return window before you buy. (affiliate links: we may earn a commission)

FAQ

When is Black Friday 2026?
Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday is November 30. Retailers set their own sale dates, so check announcements as they come out.

Is Black Friday the cheapest day for outdoor gear?
Not reliably. Adobe's 2024 forecast pointed to Thanksgiving Day for sporting goods, and its 2025 recap said bargains continued through the first week of December.

What does "All-Time Low" mean on Gear Snyper?
It means today's price is at or below the lowest price we've recorded for that product at that merchant. It covers only the time we've been tracking that item.

Check the product's price chart. If the price is near the lowest we've recorded and your size is available, there's little reason to wait.

Is REI open on Black Friday?
REI has closed its stores every Black Friday since 2015 and made the closure permanent in 2022. Online orders placed that day are processed the next day.
