The PS-31 Binocular Night Vision Device (BNVD) is a compact, lightweight dual-tube goggle, replacing the legacy PS-15. Among dual-tube night vision goggles, the PS-31 stands out as one of the smallest and lightest. It can be equipped with various high-performance US-made Gen 3 image intensifier tubes. Designed with input from U.S. Operators, the PS-31 offers enhanced resolution, significantly reduced headborne weight, improved center of gravity, increased operational utility and superior situational awareness with a 50 degree field of view for maximum visibility. These auto-gain capable tubes adjust image brightness based on ground conditions. The PS-31 BNVD features independently pivoting tube housings, allowing use in binocular or monocular configurations. Using both tubes simultaneously creates depth perception, facilitating navigation and device operation. The monocular setup allows for easy transitions between different lighting conditions, common in battlefield environments. Additionally, the pivoting housings enable the goggles to "flatten" against the front helmet surface when stowed, resulting in a lower profile that enhances operator safety and prolongs equipment life.
