Planning your first overnight backpacking adventure? This guide covers everything you need to pack for a safe and enjoyable experience in the backcountry.
The Big Three
Your pack, shelter, and sleep system make up the majority of your weight. Getting these right is crucial:
Backpack
For overnight trips, a 50-65 liter pack provides enough capacity without being excessive. Look for comfortable hip belts and adjustable torso length.
Shelter
A quality two-person tent offers the best balance of weight, space, and weather protection for beginners. Look for easy setup and good ventilation.
Sleep System
Match your sleeping bag temperature rating to the coldest conditions you'll encounter. Add 10-15 degrees to the rating for comfort. A sleeping pad provides insulation and comfort.
Clothing Layers
Pack using the layering system: base layer, insulation, and shell. Avoid cotton - it loses insulation when wet.
