For example, if your truck can tow 5,000 lbs that means it can handle a tongue weight of 500 lbs. Tongue weight is 10% of the total trailer weight and it's the calculated weight that your truck or car's rear suspension can handle. If your car has a towing capacity of 2,000 lbs, your tongue weight would be a max of 200 lbs.
